Loch Lomond and its islands from the Conic Hill walk on the West Highland Way

West Highland Way app for iPhone

West Highland Way Companion carries the route inside the app, so your position on the Way shows whether or not you have a signal. Set a goal for each day, pack from a checklist, and keep a journal as you walk.

How the map behaves without a signal

On iPhone the terrain is drawn by Apple Maps, so out of signal the background may not fill in. That matters far less than it sounds: the route line and your own position both come from the app and your phone's GPS, so you can always see the Way and see yourself on it. If you have wandered off, walk towards the line.

If you would rather have the terrain regardless, the Android version carries the map inside the app.

What you get on iPhone

Know where you are without a signal

The route is built into the app and your phone finds its position from satellites, not phone masts. You can see exactly where you are on the West Highland Way even with no signal at all.

Set a goal for each day

Tell the app where you are walking to each day — Drymen on day one, Rowardennan on day two — and it guides you there. You always know how far is left today and how far remains of the whole walk.

Find your way back to the route

Took a wrong turn, or staying somewhere off the trail? The app shows you the way back to the route line, so you can rejoin it where you left off or head straight to it in the morning.

What to pack

A ready-made packing list you can edit to suit your walk. Tick items off as they go into the rucksack so nothing gets left behind.

Keep a journal of your walk

Write up each day and add your own photographs as you go. When you are home, export the whole journal as a PDF to print or share.

Walk it in either direction

Heading north from Milngavie to Fort William, or south from Fort William to Milngavie? Switch direction and the guidance, distances and daily goals all follow the way you are actually walking.

Day and night mode

Switch between a light and a dark view for early starts, late finishes and bright days on the hill.
